Exercise – Can you identify the reason and conclusion indicators found in the text below?
1. Tesco is one of the most successful stores of its kind in Malaysia and worldwide. We know this because of the number of new stores that have been built recently and also because of its annual earnings report.
2. If we want to gather knowledge, we must first know what knowledge is. And if we would do that, we must then devise a reliable method for acquiring knowledge. So, if we want knowledge, we must devise a reliable method for acquiring it
3. Modern businesses engage in a variety of questionable practices. Sometimes these businesses cross the line. We know this because there are ethical standards and because we can document that many businesses have engaged in practices that clearly violate one or more of these standards. The Ford Motor Company’s behavior in the Ford Pinto matter is just one of many such examples.
4. Any philosopher appointed to a prominent university holding unpopular views will create some controversy. Peter Singer, recently appointed to a distinguished post at Princeton University, believes that human infanticide is morally acceptable in certain circumstances. Therefore, there will be some controversy.

Let me first give you an example on how to identify the reason and conclusion indicators in the first of the four:
reason (premise) 1 – “the number of new stores that have been built recently”
reason (premise) 2 – “because of its annual earnings report”
conclusion (argument) – “Tesco is one of the most successful stores of its kind in Malaysia and worldwide”
In the exam, underline the aforementioned lines and label them at the end of each sentence. This is how we do it:
“Tesco is one of the most successful stores of its kind in Malaysia and worldwide (c). We know this because of the number of new stores that have been built recently (r1) and also because of its annual earnings report (r2).”
